พรรคถูกก่อตั้งขึ้นภายหลังการปฏิวัติล้มล้างราชวงศ์ชิง (การปฏิวัติชิงไฮ* 辛亥革命) ในประเทศจีน. พรรคก๊กมินตั๋งรบกับพรรคคอมมิวนิสต์จีนเพื่อชิงอำนาจปกครองประเทศ ก่อนจะพ่ายแพ้และถอยหนีไปไต้หวันในปี พ.ศ. 2492 และตั้งรัฐบาลพลัดถิ่นขึ้นที่นั่น. พรรคก๊กมินตั๋งบริหารประเทศโดยเป็นรัฐบาลพรรคเดียวจนกระทั่งเกิดการเปลี่ยนแปรงระหว่างปลายทศวรรษปี ค.ศ. 1970 ถึง ค.ศ. 1990 ก็ค่อยๆเสื่อมอำนาจลง. ในสมัยแรกๆที่พรรคก๊กมินตั๋งเข้าปกครอง ไต้หวันและชื่อก๊กมินตั๋งถูกเรียกราวกับมีความหมายเหมือนกันหมายถึงจีนชาตินิยม
ณ ปัจจุบัน (พ.ศ. 2549) นี้, พรรคก๊กมินตั๋งเป็นพรรคฝ่ายค้านที่มีที่นั่งในสภามากที่สุด. ยิ่งไปกว่านั้นยังเป็นพรรคการเมืองที่ร่ำรวยที่สุดในโลก ด้วยทรัพย์สินประเมินอยู่ราว 2,600-10,000 ล้านเหรียญสหรัฐ ซึ่งทรัพย์สินของพรรคค่อยๆถูกขายออกตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2000
